ANDREW-HAYDEN-SMITH ON COMING OUT

By the time I’d made the decision to come out, I was living in London and was becoming more and more confident about being gay. I was up in Newcastle, visiting friends and family one weekend, when after a couple of drinks I decided to tell a couple of my friends, one of which was my former girlfriend. They were both great. I couldn’t have asked for a better reaction. I think the fact I’d moved to London and had a new life there gave me a bit of confidence to go ahead and do it, knowing I could run away if it had all gone the other way! But deep down I knew that wouldn’t happen and they’d be cool about it. It was a huge weight off my shoulders.
